Friendship and Faith

We all have that one friend. He or she is full of advice, they have the answer to everything we are going through, and most of the time they lead us straight into oncoming traffic. You know exactly which friend I’m talking about. Almost every conversation you have with them ends with “Just follow your heart, it will never steer you wrong.”

Jeremiah 17:9 – “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Well, speaking from personal experience I have to tell you that my heart has led me down way too many wrong paths and far too few Godly paths over my 37 years. Our hearts may want to do the right thing, but more often than not they get side-tracked with our own emotions and lose sight of what God intended them to do. The truth of the matter is that our heart wants what our flesh wants, and flesh is selfish. Our heart will lead us into places that our brains will tell us not to go – places that will bring us heartache and despair. Our heart will often lead us straight into the lion’s den.

Matthew 15:19 – “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.” Our hearts will lie to us. They will paint beautiful scenery. Whatever you can daydream up your heart can convince you that it is a wonderful idea. If your marriage is rocky your heart can convince you another partner would repair the damage. If your job isn’t going just the way you want it to go your heart can convince you that another job is the answer to your problem. Your car needs a new battery? Your heart will talk you into signing papers for a shiny new car even though you can’t afford the payment because your heart talked you into quitting your job. This list could go on forever, there are many deceitful stories the heart can write. So what are we to do?

John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. Turn on your GPS!! Luckily we have one readily available to us we only have to listen. Following your heart is like throwing dice you have a 1/6 chance to roll a seven, the other 5 rolls give you losing numbers but if you follow the leading of the Lord no matter what you roll on the dice you’re a winner. He will never lead us into anything that will damage us. On the contrary, He will lead us in the direction where we will find peace, love, and comfort like we have never known.
